GPA (Grade Point Average) calculations serve two distinct purposes in India: the 10-point scale GPA used in most Indian universities (IITs, NITs, IIMs, and most UGC-affiliated universities) and the 4.0-point scale GPA used in the United States (relevant for students applying to US universities or understanding their standing in international contexts). Both are credit-weighted averages — subjects with higher credit hours have proportionally more influence on the GPA. Understanding both scales is essential for Indian students navigating both domestic career paths and international education opportunities.
Indian 10-point GPA calculation (SGPA for semester, CGPA for cumulative): each subject has a credit value (typically 2-5 credits for engineering subjects) and a grade point (based on marks range — 10 for O grade, 9 for A+, 8 for A, 7 for B+, etc. varies by institution). SGPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credits) / Sum of Credits. Example: three subjects — 4 credits/grade-8, 3 credits/grade-9, 2 credits/grade-7 = (32 + 27 + 14) / (4+3+2) = 73/9 = 8.11 SGPA. CGPA is the same calculation across all semesters combined.
US 4.0 GPA scale (relevant for students going abroad or comparing): standard grade points — A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Calculation: same credit-weighted average. A B+ in a 3-credit course and an A in a 2-credit course = (3.3×3 + 4.0×2) / 5 = (9.9 + 8.0) / 5 = 3.58 GPA. Cumulative GPA across all courses is used for academic standing, honors (3.5+ = Dean's List at most US universities), and graduate school applications.

Common use cases
- Calculating SGPA for a semester at NIT with 6 subjects of different credit weights and grades
- Computing cumulative CGPA across 6 semesters of a BTech programme at an IIT to check honors eligibility
- Converting Indian 10-point CGPA of 8.2 to approximate 4.0 GPA scale for a US master's application
- Calculating minimum grade needed in remaining subjects to achieve a target CGPA of 8.0
- Computing GPA needed in final semester to meet the 6.5 CGPA requirement for a placement drive
Tips for best results
- 1Credit hours matter more than number of subjects — a 5-credit core subject affects CGPA 2.5× more than a 2-credit elective; prioritize high-credit subjects during exam preparation
- 2Use the reverse GPA calculator: if you need a specific final CGPA, input your current CGPA and credits completed to find what SGPA you need in remaining semesters
- 3For IIT placements: a 7.5+ CGPA is typically required for the most sought-after companies; 8.0+ for finance/consulting roles; 6.5+ for most IT companies
- 4Project and lab credits count toward CGPA equally — treat lab evaluations and project submissions seriously, not as less important than theory exams
- 5If applying to US universities: GPA of 8.5/10 from an IIT is typically viewed very favorably despite converting to approximately 3.7/4.0 — context and institution name carry significant weight
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the GPA Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- How is CGPA calculated in IIT?
- IIT grading uses a 10-point scale with letter grades: O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C+ = 5, C = 4, D = 3 (passing minimum in most IITs), F = 0 (fail). Each course has credits (1-5 depending on lecture/lab/tutorial hours). SGPA for a semester = Sum of (Grade Point × Course Credits) / Sum of Credits. CGPA = Sum of (Grade Point × Credits) across ALL semesters / Total Credits completed. IIT-M, IIT-B, and IIT-D each have minor variations in grading thresholds (marks required for each grade). Backlogs (failed courses) significantly impact CGPA and must be cleared; cleared backlog grades replace original grades in CGPA calculation.
- What is the minimum CGPA required for placements at top companies?
- CGPA cutoffs for campus placements at IITs and NITs (indicative, companies update annually): Investment banking / consulting (McKinsey, BCG, Goldman, etc.) — 8.0+ CGPA typically. Technology product companies (Google, Microsoft, Adobe, etc.) — 7.0-7.5+. IT services (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL) — 6.0-7.0 (Infosys InfyTQ: 6.0; TCS: 6.0 for TCS and 7.0 for TCS Digital). PSU recruitment via GATE — 6.5-7.5 CGPA as part of eligibility. Core engineering companies — 6.5-7.5 depending on company. CGPA is usually one eligibility filter; the actual selection is based on aptitude tests, technical interviews, and HR interviews. A high CGPA alone is insufficient; technical skills are the primary selection criterion.
- How do I convert my 10-point CGPA to 4.0 GPA scale?
- Unofficial conversion formula (widely accepted but not endorsed by any official body): Multiply 10-point CGPA by 0.4. Example: 8.5 × 0.4 = 3.4/4.0. Alternatively: 10.0 → 4.0; 9.0 → 3.7; 8.0 → 3.3; 7.0 → 2.7; 6.0 → 2.0. For official US university applications, most departments accept the Indian 10-point scale directly — state 'CGPA: 8.5 on 10.0 scale' rather than converting. WES (World Education Services) evaluation costs $150-225 and provides officially recognized GPA conversion. For student visa (F-1) applications, USCIS accepts Indian grades as-is. Converting to 4.0 scale is mainly needed for internal research purposes or when a form specifically requires 4.0 scale GPA.
- What GPA is required for Summa Cum Laude or with distinction honors?
- Latin honors in the US: Summa Cum Laude (highest honors) — typically 3.9+ GPA (varies by university); Magna Cum Laude — 3.7-3.8+; Cum Laude — 3.5-3.6+. Specific cutoffs vary by institution. Indian university honors: First Class with Distinction requires 75-80% depending on university. IIT Gold Medal: top ranker (highest CGPA) in the department. IIM distinction: typically top 10-15% of the batch. For competitive exam bonuses: UPSC does not give bonus marks for academic honors. Some PSU recruitments give additional marks for distinction/first class — check specific recruitment notifications. Academic honors primarily matter for: research scholarships (PM Research Fellowship requires 7.5+ CGPA), US university applications, and certain prestigious recruitment programmes.
