Meta tags are HTML elements in the <head> section that provide metadata about a webpage — information that browsers, search engines, and social media platforms use to understand, index, and display the page. SEO meta tags include the title tag (<title>) and meta description (<meta name="description">), which directly influence click-through rates in Google search results. The title should be 50-60 characters (truncated at ~60 in Google SERP), and the meta description should be 120-160 characters — both should include target keywords naturally.
Open Graph (OG) tags enable rich link previews when content is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and other social platforms. Essential OG tags: og:title (page title for social sharing), og:description (1-2 sentence description), og:image (1200×630px recommended, must be absolute URL), og:url (canonical URL), og:type (article, website, product). Twitter Card tags enable rich previews on X/Twitter: twitter:card (summary or summary_large_image), twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image. Without these tags, social shares display ugly link previews with randomly selected images.
Technical meta tags for performance and compatibility: viewport meta tag is essential for mobile-responsive sites (<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">); robots meta tag controls crawler indexing (<meta name="robots" content="index, follow"> or "noindex" for private pages); charset declaration (<meta charset="UTF-8"> is critical for Indian language content — Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu all require UTF-8); canonical tag prevents duplicate content issues for URLs with query parameters; hreflang tags specify language/region for multilingual Indian sites (en-in vs en-us).

Common use cases
- Generating complete SEO meta tags for a Bengaluru-based restaurant's website with local keywords
- Creating Open Graph tags for a news article to ensure beautiful previews when shared on WhatsApp groups
- Generating Twitter Card meta tags for a startup's product launch page
- Creating noindex meta tags for admin pages, user profiles, and filtered search result pages
- Generating hreflang tags for an e-commerce site targeting both Indian (en-IN) and international English audiences
Tips for best results
- 1Include the primary keyword in the first 60 characters of the title tag — Google bolds matched keywords in SERP, improving click-through rate
- 2Write meta descriptions as compelling ad copy, not just keyword-stuffed summaries — the description is your elevator pitch in the SERP; include a call-to-action
- 3Use absolute URLs (https://www.yoursite.com/page) for og:image — relative URLs break when shared from external platforms
- 4Test your OG tags using Facebook Debugger (developers.facebook.com/tools/debug), LinkedIn Post Inspector, and Twitter Card Validator before launching
- 5Keep og:image under 1MB and in JPEG format — PNG is supported but larger file sizes increase load time for social crawlers, affecting preview quality
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Meta Tag Generator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- What is the ideal length for title tags and meta descriptions?
- Title tags: 50-60 characters including spaces. Google truncates titles at ~600 pixels width, equivalent to about 58-60 characters in standard fonts. Shorter titles (under 50 chars) waste valuable real estate. Meta descriptions: 120-155 characters for desktop, 70-105 for mobile (Google truncates differently on mobile). Write for mobile-first since majority of Indian Google searches are on mobile. Both title and description should include your primary keyword, ideally near the beginning. Use a tool like Moz Title Tag Preview or Google's SERP snippet preview to verify actual display length, which depends on the specific characters used (wide characters like W consume more space).
- Does the meta description affect Google rankings?
- The meta description does NOT directly affect Google search rankings — Google confirmed it is not a ranking signal. However, it significantly affects Click-Through Rate (CTR) — a compelling description that matches user intent gets more clicks, and higher CTR can indirectly improve rankings as a user engagement signal. Additionally, Google often rewrites meta descriptions (using any relevant text on the page) if the provided description doesn't match the search query well. Write descriptions for human readers first, then optimize for keywords. For Indian e-commerce, including price ranges ('From ₹499'), ratings ('4.5★ rated'), or offers ('Free delivery') in descriptions improves CTR significantly.
- What are Open Graph tags and why are they important for WhatsApp sharing?
- Open Graph protocol (developed by Facebook, now used universally) provides metadata for rich link previews when URLs are shared on social platforms. WhatsApp, the dominant communication platform in India with 500M+ users, uses OG tags to generate link previews in chat. Without OG tags: WhatsApp may show no preview, or a random small image from the page. With OG tags: shows a large thumbnail (og:image), title, and description in a formatted card. For Indian businesses, WhatsApp link sharing is a primary marketing channel — properly configured OG tags dramatically increase engagement. og:image should be 1200×630px (1.91:1 ratio) with key visual centered in the image.
- How do I prevent certain pages from appearing in Google search?
- To prevent Google indexing: (1) Meta robots tag: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> — prevents indexing and link following; (2) X-Robots-Tag HTTP header — for non-HTML files (PDFs, images); (3) robots.txt Disallow — prevents Googlebot from crawling (but not necessarily indexing if the URL is linked elsewhere); (4) Google Search Console URL removal tool — for emergency removal of already-indexed pages. Use noindex for: admin pages, user account pages, filtered search results (e.g., /products?sort=price), thank-you pages, and internal staging content accidentally published. Do not use noindex on pages you want indexed — obvious, but CMS systems (WordPress, Webflow) sometimes have settings that accidentally noindex important pages.
