Advance tax is a 'pay as you earn' system where taxpayers with tax liability exceeding ₹10,000 after TDS must pay tax in quarterly installments during the financial year itself, rather than in one payment at year-end. For FY 2025-26, the installment schedule is: on or before June 15 — 15% of estimated annual tax; September 15 — 45% (cumulative); December 15 — 75% (cumulative); March 15 — 100% (cumulative). Salaried employees whose TDS fully covers their tax liability need not pay advance tax.

Interest penalties for advance tax shortfall: Section 234B levies 1% simple interest per month on tax liability minus advance tax paid if advance tax paid is less than 90% of assessed tax. Section 234C levies 1% per month on shortfall from each installment — if you pay less than 15% by June 15, 1% interest applies on the shortfall for 3 months; for September shortfall, 3 months; December shortfall, 3 months; March shortfall, 1 month. For individuals with presumptive income (Section 44AD/44ADA), the entire advance tax can be paid in one installment on or before March 15.

Advance tax computation requires estimating total income across all heads (salary, business/profession, capital gains, rental income, other sources) for the full financial year, deducting eligible deductions (80C to 80U), and computing tax at applicable rates. Capital gains occurring late in the year (October-December) allow revised estimates — if actual capital gains are significantly different from estimates, advance tax can be recalculated without 234C interest for the capital gains portion specifically.

Common use cases

  • Planning quarterly advance tax installments for a freelancer earning ₹15L annually across 4 clients
  • Calculating Section 234C interest liability for missing the September 15 advance tax deadline
  • Estimating advance tax for a salaried employee with additional rental income of ₹18,000/month
  • Determining advance tax obligation for a stock trader with expected ₹5L capital gains in Q3
  • Computing the one-shot March 15 advance tax for a small business filing under presumptive taxation (44AD)

Tips for best results

  • 1Compute advance tax in April itself using estimated annual income — better to pay early and get interest (interest on refund under Section 244A) than underpay and pay 234C interest
  • 2Business income fluctuates — revise your advance tax estimate each quarter; 234C interest is waived if you pay 100% of previous year tax as advance (safe harbor provision)
  • 3Freelancers and consultants with variable income: consider paying slightly above the 90% threshold each installment to avoid 234B interest
  • 4Capital gains (equity trading, property sale) are hard to predict — if a large capital event occurs in Q3, make a supplementary advance tax payment immediately
  • 5Use the NSDL tax payment challan (Challan 280) online via net banking for advance tax — keep challan copies for each installment for ITR verification

Who needs to pay advance tax in India?
Advance tax applies to individuals/entities where tax liability (after TDS credit) exceeds ₹10,000 in a financial year. Practically: freelancers, business owners, landlords with rental income, traders with capital gains, and salaried employees with significant side income. Salaried employees whose employer properly deducts TDS from salary typically don't need separate advance tax unless they have additional income (interest, rent, capital gains) exceeding ₹10,000 net tax. Senior citizens (60+) with no business income are exempt from advance tax — they can pay all tax by March 31 without 234B/234C interest.
What is the difference between Section 234B and 234C interest?
Section 234B: Charged when total advance tax paid is less than 90% of assessed tax. Interest = 1% per month from April 1 (of assessment year) until date of tax payment. Example: Tax liability ₹5L, advance tax paid ₹2L (40%) — 234B applies. Section 234C: Charged for shortfall in each specific installment. June installment: if paid less than 15% of assessed tax, interest for 3 months. September: shortfall below 45%, interest for 3 months. December: shortfall below 75%, interest for 3 months. March: shortfall below 100%, interest for 1 month. Both sections can apply simultaneously — 234B for overall shortfall and 234C for quarterly shortfalls.
Can I pay advance tax even if I am a salaried employee?
Yes, and it is sometimes beneficial. If you have income beyond salary — rental income, interest on FD, capital gains from stock trading, freelance income, or any other source — the TDS on salary may not cover total tax liability. You must pay advance tax on the additional liability if it exceeds ₹10,000. For regular traders with monthly profit, pay advance tax each quarter. For one-time capital gains (property sale), pay advance tax immediately after the transaction to minimize 234C interest. Even if not mandatory, paying early avoids year-end scramble and possible interest.
How do I calculate advance tax for FY 2025-26?
Step 1: Estimate total income for FY 2025-26 (project salary, expected rental income, estimated capital gains, interest income, business income). Step 2: Subtract eligible deductions (80C investments ₹1.5L, 80D health insurance, HRA exemption under old regime, standard deduction ₹75,000 under new regime). Step 3: Apply tax rate schedule to compute gross tax. Step 4: Subtract expected TDS (from Form 16 projection, bank TDS, etc.). Step 5: Remaining tax liability above ₹10,000 requires advance tax. Pay 15% by June 15, 45% by September 15, 75% by December 15, 100% by March 15 (cumulative percentages, not incremental).
