India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) has 8 rate slabs: 0% (essential items — unpacked food, education, health services), 0.1% (certain goods like cut and semi-polished diamonds), 0.25% (rough industrial diamonds, river sand), 3% (gold, silver, precious metals), 5% (packaged food, household items, economy-class transport), 12% (processed food, mobiles, textbooks), 18% (most manufactured goods, IT services, restaurants with air conditioning), and 28% (luxury goods, automobiles, aerated drinks, tobacco). The GST Council periodically revises rates — businesses must verify current rates via the official GST portal.
Within India, CGST (Central GST) + SGST (State GST) are levied for intra-state transactions, each at half the applicable rate. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is charged at the full rate. For example, an 18% GST restaurant bill within Maharashtra comprises 9% CGST + 9% Maharashtra SGST. The same service provided by a Bengaluru restaurant to a Delhi customer would attract 18% IGST. Input Tax Credit (ITC) flows only when GST is correctly categorized — incorrect CGST/SGST vs IGST classification is a common compliance error.
The Composition Scheme under GST allows small businesses with annual turnover up to ₹1.5Cr (₹75L for service providers) to pay GST at flat rates: 1% for manufacturers, 5% for restaurants, 6% for other service providers. Composition scheme taxpayers cannot collect GST from customers and cannot claim ITC. The reverse charge mechanism (RCM) applies in specific transactions — the recipient pays GST instead of the supplier, particularly in transactions with unregistered suppliers and certain notified services like legal, security, and transportation.

Tips for best results
- 1Always cross-check GST rates on the official GST Council rate finder (gstcouncil.gov.in) before quoting — incorrect rates cause ITC mismatches and notices
- 2For restaurant bills: 5% GST (no ITC) applies to non-AC restaurants; 5% (no ITC) also applies to AC restaurants since 2019 — there is no longer a 18% rate for AC restaurants
- 3HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code determines GST rate for goods; SAC (Service Accounting Code) for services — obtain the correct code for your product from the GST rate schedule
- 4Under reverse charge, maintain separate records — you pay GST to the government directly, not to the supplier, and can claim ITC separately
- 5E-invoicing is mandatory for businesses with turnover above ₹5Cr — ensure your billing software generates IRN (Invoice Reference Number) from the IRP (Invoice Registration Portal)

- Official ways to verify GST rate: (1) GST Rate Finder on the GST Portal (gst.gov.in) — search by commodity or HSN code; (2) Customs Tariff (for goods) or Service Tax Code (for services); (3) CBIC circular/notification database for specific exemptions. For manufactured goods, find the 4-digit HSN code from the GST Rate Schedule (Schedule I to V). For services, find the SAC code.
