What Are Direct and Regular Plans?

SEBI mandated all mutual fund schemes to offer two plans from 2013: Direct plan (no distributor commission, lower expense ratio) and Regular plan (includes distributor/agent commission, higher expense ratio).

Same fund manager, same portfolio, same stocks — only the expense ratio differs. The difference in expense ratio: 0.5–1.5% for equity funds; 0.1–0.5% for debt funds. Sounds small but compounding makes it enormous over time.

Example: HDFC Flexi Cap Fund — Regular plan expense ratio: 1.54%. Direct plan: 0.75%. Difference: 0.79%. Over 20 years on a ₹10,000/month SIP, this single difference can result in ₹15–25 lakh more wealth in the direct plan.

Why Regular Plans Exist and When They Make Sense

Distributors earn 0.5–1.5% trail commission annually on the amount invested through them. This is priced into the expense ratio of regular plans. Banks heavily promote regular plans because they earn significant commissions.

Regular plans make sense: if your advisor adds tangible value (financial planning, portfolio rebalancing, behavioral coaching, estate planning) that you genuinely need. A good fee-only financial advisor who charges separately and recommends direct plans is worth their fee.

Regular plans do NOT make sense for: self-directed investors who can research funds, investors using SIP on platforms that support direct plans, anyone investing in index funds where advisor value is minimal.

How to Invest in Direct Plans

1. AMC website directly: Go to hdfcfund.com, mirae-asset.com etc. Register with PAN and bank details. Start SIP in direct plan. 2. MF utility (mfuonline.com): Single platform for direct plans across all AMCs. 3. Zerodha Coin, Groww, ET Money: Fintech platforms offering commission-free direct plan investment.

Switching from Regular to Direct: Redeem regular plan units (capital gains tax applies) and reinvest in direct plan. For large SIP portfolios, it may make sense to stop new investments in regular plan and start fresh SIPs in direct plan, letting existing regular units continue to avoid immediate tax outgo.

For NRI investors: Direct plan investment is possible through NRE/NRO accounts on most AMC platforms. Some fintech platforms like Coin support NRI accounts with proper KYC.

Index Funds: Even Better Than Direct Active Funds?

Index funds replicate market indices (Nifty 50, Nifty 500, Sensex) with minimal fund manager intervention. Expense ratios: 0.1–0.2% — even lower than direct active funds.

SEBI data shows that over 10 years, 75–80% of actively managed large-cap equity funds in India have underperformed the Nifty 50 TRI (Total Return Index). Given this, paying 0.75–1.5% for active management that fails to beat the index is questionable.

Recommendation for most investors: Core portfolio (70%) in Nifty 50 or Nifty 500 index funds. Satellite allocation (30%) in proven alpha-generating active funds like PPFAS Flexicap, Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip, or HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities — all in direct plans.
