The Options for Short-Term Money
Most Indians default to savings accounts or FDs for all their liquid money — often leaving significant returns on the table. As of 2025–26: top savings account rates are 6.5–7% (AU Bank, Equitas, IDFC First); FD rates at major banks are 6.5–7.5% for 1–3 year tenures; liquid mutual fund yields are approximately 7–8%.
For money you'll need within 1–3 years (emergency fund, upcoming house down payment, vacation fund), the choice between these three instruments has a meaningful impact on your wealth over time.
Savings Account: Maximum Flexibility, Lowest Return
Best for: Daily transaction account, emergency fund (immediately accessible), cash you'll need within 7–10 days. Features: Fully liquid (24/7 ATM, IMPS, UPI), interest credited monthly, DICGC insured up to ₹5 lakh per bank.
Rate reality: Most PSU bank savings accounts pay 2.5–3.5%. Small finance banks (AU, Equitas, IDFC) pay 5–7% but carry slightly higher operational risk. Section 80TTA: ₹10,000 annual savings interest is tax-exempt for non-seniors. Seniors get ₹50,000 exemption under 80TTB.
Best savings account strategy: 1–2 months of expenses in a regular savings account. Additional 2–4 months in a high-yield savings account (AU Bank, Equitas) or sweep FD.
Fixed Deposits: Guaranteed Returns, Limited Flexibility
Best for: Money you won't need for 1+ year, capital protection with better returns than savings, systematic depositing for goals. Rates in 2025: SBI 6.5–7%, HDFC Bank 7–7.5%, small finance banks 8–9%.
Senior citizens get 0.25–0.75% additional rate at most banks. Tax: FD interest is added to income and taxed at slab rate. TDS at 10% deducted if annual interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for seniors). Submit Form 15G/15H if income is below taxable limit.
FD lock-in: premature withdrawal typically incurs 0.5–1% penalty. Liquid FDs (with partial withdrawal facility) offer better flexibility. Ladder your FDs across multiple tenures (3-month, 6-month, 1-year, 2-year) for regular liquidity without penalty.
Liquid Mutual Funds: Best Risk-Adjusted Short-Term Option
Best for: Emergency fund beyond immediate needs, parking money for 3 months to 1 year, parking advance tax funds, salary surpluses. Returns: 7–8% in current market. Completely liquid — withdraw in T+1 day (SEBI mandate for overnight/liquid funds, instant redemption up to ₹50,000 for instant payout funds).
Tax: For holding periods under 3 years, gains are added to income and taxed at slab rate. Above 3 years: 20% with indexation (significantly better for investors in 30% bracket). This makes liquid funds more tax-efficient than FDs for investors in the 30% tax bracket over 3 years.
For most investors: SBI Liquid Fund, HDFC Liquid Fund, Mirae Asset Liquid Fund are reliable options with high credit quality portfolios and consistent returns. Zero exit load after 7 days.
