CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is the simplest and most universal data exchange format, compatible with every spreadsheet application and database system. JSON is the universal format for web APIs and modern applications. Converting CSV to JSON bridges these two ecosystems — enabling CSV data exports from legacy systems to be consumed by modern web APIs and applications.

This tool converts a CSV file to a JSON array of objects, using the CSV header row as the JSON object keys. It handles comma, semicolon, tab, and pipe delimiters; quoted fields containing commas; multi-line values; and various character encodings (UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO-8859-1).

System administrators use CSV-to-JSON for data migrations. Developers use it to convert flat data exports into API-ready payloads. Data analysts use it to feed CSV report data into JSON-consuming tools and dashboards. Operations teams use it to convert bulk export data from one system into the import format of another.

How to use this utility

  1. Use the controls below—paste text, pick files, or adjust options as described on the tool.
  2. Click the main action button. Processing runs in your browser on this device.
  3. Download or copy the output. Check the processing note for any external services used by this operation.

Common use cases

  • Converting a CRM contact export CSV into JSON for import into a new CRM via API.
  • Transforming a product CSV export from Shopify or WooCommerce into JSON for a custom web app.
  • Converting a user upload CSV into JSON for a database seed script.
  • Turning a tab-delimited government data file into JSON for analysis in a JavaScript application.
  • Converting a CSV survey responses export into JSON for a data visualisation tool.

Tips for best results

  • 1Check the delimiter type of your CSV before converting — some CSVs use semicolons (;) or tabs rather than commas, especially from European software.
  • 2Ensure the CSV is properly encoded (UTF-8) to prevent special characters (ñ, é, Indian script characters) from appearing as garbled symbols in the JSON.
  • 3For CSVs with date columns, decide on a consistent date format before converting — ISO 8601 (2024-01-15) is the most JSON-compatible format.
  • 4Remove BOM (Byte Order Mark) characters from UTF-8 CSVs if they cause the first field name to appear garbled ('field_name').
  • 5After conversion, validate the JSON structure to ensure all rows were converted and no data was truncated.

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the CSV to JSON tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
What delimiters does the tool support?
The tool auto-detects comma, semicolon, tab, and pipe delimiters. You can also manually specify the delimiter if auto-detection fails.
What happens with CSV fields that contain commas (quoted fields)?
Standard CSV quoting (double-quoted fields containing commas) is handled correctly — the quoted field is treated as one value, not split at the internal comma.
Can I convert a CSV with no header row?
Yes — in 'no header' mode, the tool generates integer-keyed JSON objects (e.g., {'0': 'value1', '1': 'value2'}) or arrays per row. You can optionally provide column names manually.
How large a CSV file can I upload?
CSV files up to 25 MB are supported. For very large CSVs (100,000+ rows), consider splitting them first and converting in chunks.
