The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme for all employees earning up to ₹15,000/month in organisations with 20 or more employees (and optional for higher earners). Both employer and employee contribute 12% of basic salary + DA to the EPF account each month. Of the employer's 12%, 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) and only 3.67% to the EPF corpus — making the actual EPF contribution 15.67% per month (12% employee + 3.67% employer).
EPF interest is declared annually by the EPFO (the current rate is 8.25% for FY 2024-25) and credited at the end of the financial year. The account is exempt from tax on contributions (Section 80C for employee share), interest earned, and withdrawal after 5 continuous years of service — making EPF another EEE instrument. The EPF corpus is a cornerstone of retirement planning for salaried employees.
Our EPF calculator shows the corpus based on current salary, contribution rates, and tenure. Keep in mind that salary increments increase the EPF corpus significantly — this calculator uses a fixed salary for simplicity. In practice, a 5–8% annual increment will grow your EPF corpus substantially more than the projection shown. The EPS pension component is calculated separately and is not included in the EPF maturity corpus shown here.

- An employee considering a job change wants to know their current EPF balance and how long to leave it to benefit from tax-free withdrawal.
- An HR professional is explaining EPF deductions and employer contribution to a new joiner.
- Someone with a salary of ₹50,000/month is comparing EPF savings with additional voluntary contributions (VPF) at higher contribution rates.

Tips for best results
- 1Consider Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) contributions — you can contribute up to 100% of your basic salary to EPF/VPF. Returns are the same as EPF (8.25%), and contributions are deductible under 80C.
- 2Do not withdraw EPF on job changes. Instead, transfer the balance using the UAN portal (Form-13 online). Withdrawing before 5 years of service makes the entire amount taxable.
- 3Your UAN (Universal Account Number) links EPF accounts across employers. Activate and keep it updated to avoid dormant account issues.
- 4EPF withdrawal before 5 continuous years of service attracts TDS at 10% (30% without PAN). After 5 years, withdrawal is completely tax-free.
- 5Check your EPF passbook regularly at the EPFO member portal to ensure contributions are being deposited on time by your employer.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the EPF Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- What is the difference between EPF and EPS?
- EPF (Employee Provident Fund) is the corpus in your account, earning 8.25% interest and payable to you on retirement or resignation. EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) is funded by 8.33% of the employer's 12% contribution and provides a monthly pension at retirement — calculated on pensionable service and pensionable salary (capped at ₹15,000).
- Can I withdraw EPF while still employed?
- Partial EPF withdrawal is allowed for specific purposes like marriage (up to 50% after 7 years), home purchase/construction (up to 90%), medical emergency, education, and house renovation — with varying eligibility criteria.
- How is EPF interest calculated?
- EPFO calculates interest monthly on the opening balance plus contributions, but credits it annually on 31st March. The running total is used for interest calculation, so a contribution made on 1st April earns interest for the full year.
- Is EPF interest taxable after the 2021 budget?
- From FY 2021-22, EPF interest on employee contributions exceeding ₹2.5 lakh/year is taxable. For most salaried employees contributing 12% of their basic, this limit is rarely crossed, but high earners making VPF contributions should note this.
