The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is India's most popular long-term small savings scheme. Backed by the Government of India and offering tax-free returns, PPF is used by millions of Indians for retirement planning, children's education, and general wealth building. The minimum deposit is ₹500 per year and the maximum is ₹1.5 lakh per year. Deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C, and both interest earned and maturity proceeds are completely tax-free — making PPF one of the very few EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) instruments.
PPF has a mandatory lock-in of 15 years. After 15 years, you can either close the account and withdraw the corpus, or extend it in blocks of 5 years with or without fresh contributions. The current interest rate is 7.1% per annum (compounded annually), revised quarterly by the Government. Interest is calculated on the minimum balance between the 5th and last day of each month — meaning deposits made before the 5th of a month earn interest for that entire month.
Our PPF calculator shows year-wise balance growth, total deposits, and interest earned. The compounding effect is significant: ₹1.5 lakh invested annually for 15 years at 7.1% yields approximately ₹40.7 lakh — of which ₹22.5 lakh is interest earned tax-free. Extending to 20 years at the same contribution grows the corpus to approximately ₹65 lakh.

Tips for best results
- 1Deposit before the 5th of April each year to earn interest for the entire financial year. A late deposit by even one day costs you one month's interest.
- 2Maximise your deposit to ₹1.5 lakh per year. Even if you invest ₹12,500/month or as a lump sum in April, you get the full 80C benefit and earn interest from day one.
- 3Partial withdrawal is allowed from the 7th financial year onwards. You can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th year preceding the year of withdrawal.
- 4Loan against PPF is available from year 3 to year 6 at 1% above the PPF rate — cheaper than personal loans.
- 5Use extension mode (without fresh deposits) after 15 years if you don't need the money. The corpus continues to earn 7.1% tax-free without any fresh contributions required.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the PPF Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Can I open a PPF account for my wife and children?
- You can open a PPF account for your minor children and contribute on their behalf, but the combined 80C limit applies across all accounts. Spouses must open their own independent PPF accounts.
- Is PPF interest rate fixed?
- No. The PPF rate is revised quarterly by the Government of India based on G-Sec yields plus a spread. It has ranged from 7.1% (current) to 12% in earlier years. For planning purposes, assume 7–7.5% as a conservative estimate.
- What happens if I miss a PPF deposit in a year?
- Your account becomes 'discontinued' if you deposit less than ₹500 in a financial year. You can revive it by paying ₹50 penalty per inactive year plus the minimum deposit. Discontinued accounts cannot take loans and earn lower interest.
- Can NRIs invest in PPF?
- NRIs cannot open new PPF accounts. However, if an existing resident account holder becomes an NRI, they can continue the account until maturity (15 years) but cannot extend it further.
