JSON Formatter & Validator

Format, minify, and validate JSON with syntax highlighting and error detection.

Run JSON Formatter & Validator online

In-browserDocument processing runs on your device. External resources may still load.

Enable JavaScript to use the interactive tool. Read the instructions, limitations and FAQs below before starting.

The JSON Formatter is an online tool to beautify, minify, and validate JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) data directly in your browser. JSON is the universal data interchange format used by virtually every web API, configuration file, database export, and development tool. When received from APIs or logs, JSON is often compact (no whitespace) or malformed, making it hard to read or debug.

Our formatter parses your JSON and renders it with configurable indentation (2 or 4 spaces), color-coded keys and values, and clear error messages when the JSON is invalid. This is essential for frontend developers debugging API responses, backend engineers validating data payloads, QA engineers inspecting test data, and DevOps professionals reading configuration files.

All processing is client-side — your JSON data never leaves your browser. This is particularly important when working with sensitive production data, API keys, tokens, or internal configuration that should not be shared with third-party servers. The minify function is useful when reducing payload size for storage or transmission; the beautify function is for human readability during development.

How to use this utility

  1. Use the controls below—paste text, pick files, or adjust options as described on the tool.
  2. Click the main action button. Processing runs in your browser on this device.
  3. Download or copy the output. Check the processing note for any external services used by this operation.

Common use cases

  • Debugging malformed JSON responses from REST APIs
  • Beautifying compact JSON from curl commands or Postman
  • Validating JSON config files before deploying applications
  • Inspecting database exports from MongoDB, Firebase, or DynamoDB
  • Formatting JSON logs from AWS CloudWatch or application servers

Tips for best results

  • 1Use 2-space indent for cleaner output in code reviews and documentation
  • 2Minified JSON is 10–30% smaller — use it in production API responses
  • 3JSON keys must be double-quoted strings — single quotes are not valid JSON
  • 4Trailing commas are not valid JSON (unlike JavaScript objects) — common error from copy-paste
  • 5Use JSON Schema validation for strict structure validation beyond syntax checking

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the JSON Formatter & Validator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
Is my data safe when I paste JSON here?
Completely safe. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. No data is sent to any server. The tool has no backend — it's 100% static HTML/JS. You can even use it offline after the page loads.
Why is JSON better than XML?
JSON is more compact (no opening and closing tags), natively supported by JavaScript (JSON.parse/stringify), and easier to read. For most web APIs, JSON has replaced XML. XML is still used in legacy systems, SOAP web services, and document standards like DOCX/XLSX.
What is the difference between JSON and JSONP?
JSONP (JSON with Padding) is an older technique to bypass CORS restrictions by wrapping JSON in a function call. It is largely obsolete — CORS headers on the server are the modern solution. Standard JSON is what you should use in all new development.
Can I validate JSON against a schema?
This formatter validates syntax (is it valid JSON?) but not schema (does it match an expected structure?). For JSON Schema validation, use tools like AJV (JavaScript), jsonschema (Python), or online tools like jsonschemavalidator.net.
