Unix Timestamp Converter

Convert between Unix timestamps and human-readable dates in any timezone.

The Unix Timestamp Converter converts between Unix/epoch timestamps and human-readable dates in any timezone. Unix time counts seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC — the universal standard for representing time in computers, databases, APIs, and log files.

Our tool displays a live-updating current Unix timestamp, converts any timestamp (seconds or milliseconds) to a formatted date string, and converts any datetime to its Unix timestamp. This is invaluable for debugging API responses, reading database audit fields, and interpreting log timestamps.

Millisecond timestamps (used by JavaScript's Date.now(), Java, and most modern systems) are 13 digits. Second timestamps (used by Python's time.time(), Unix/Linux, Go) are 10 digits. Our tool auto-detects which format you entered.

How to use this utility

  1. Use the controls below—paste text, pick files, or adjust options as described on the tool.
  2. Click the main action button. Processing runs in your browser on this device.
  3. Download or copy the output. Check the processing note for any external services used by this operation.

Common use cases

  • Debugging JWT token exp and iat claims (which are Unix timestamps)
  • Interpreting created_at and updated_at fields from database exports
  • Converting log file timestamps from epoch to readable format
  • Calculating time differences between two Unix timestamps
  • Verifying API rate limit reset times sent as Unix timestamps

Tips for best results

  • 113-digit timestamps are milliseconds (JavaScript); 10-digit are seconds (most others)
  • 2Divide ms timestamp by 1000 to get seconds; multiply seconds × 1000 for JavaScript
  • 31 billion seconds = year 2001; 2 billion = year 2033; current epoch is around 1.7 billion
  • 4Use Date.now() in JS or time.time() in Python to get current timestamp programmatically
  • 5Store timestamps in UTC in databases; convert to local timezone only for display

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the Unix Timestamp Converter tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
What is the Unix epoch and why January 1, 1970?
The Unix epoch (January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC) was chosen by early Unix developers as a round number close to when Unix was being developed (late 1960s). The exact date has no special significance — it was simply a convenient starting point that predated all Unix systems at the time.
What is the Y2K38 problem?
Unix timestamps stored in 32-bit signed integers overflow on January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC (2³¹ − 1 seconds). Systems using 32-bit timestamps will interpret this as negative numbers, causing date calculation errors. Modern 64-bit systems are unaffected — they can represent dates until year 292 billion.
How do I get the current Unix timestamp in different languages?
JavaScript: Math.floor(Date.now()/1000) or Date.now() for ms. Python: import time; time.time() or int(time.time()). Java: System.currentTimeMillis()/1000. Go: time.Now().Unix(). SQL: UNIX_TIMESTAMP() (MySQL), EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM NOW()) (PostgreSQL).
What timezone does Unix timestamp represent?
Unix timestamps are always in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) by definition — they have no timezone. When you convert a Unix timestamp to a human-readable date, you apply a timezone offset. The same Unix timestamp represents different local times in different timezones — 1700000000 is 3:13 PM UTC, 8:43 PM IST, 10:13 AM EST simultaneously.
