Adding page numbers to a PDF is a professional finishing step for multi-page documents like reports, proposals, manuals, and academic submissions. Page numbers help readers navigate a document, allow referencing specific pages in discussions, and are often required for formal submissions such as thesis documents, court filings, and tender proposals.
This tool adds customisable page numbers to every page of your PDF — you can choose the position (bottom centre, bottom right, top right, etc.), the starting number, the format (Page X, X of Y, Roman numerals, etc.), and the font size. For documents that need to skip numbering on the first page (e.g., a cover page), you can set the numbering to start from page 2.
Page numbers are added as a PDF text overlay, preserving the original page content exactly. The numbers are embedded as vector text objects, which means they scale cleanly at any zoom level and remain sharp when printed.

Tips for best results
- 1For documents with a cover page and table of contents, set the starting page number and first-numbered page appropriately — many styles skip numbering on the cover and begin on page 2 or 3.
- 2Choose a small font size (8–10pt) for footnote-style numbers and a standard size (11–12pt) for running header numbers.
- 3Roman numerals (i, ii, iii...) are traditionally used for front matter (preface, TOC) and Arabic numerals for the main body.
- 4Use 'Page X of Y' format for documents where showing total page count is helpful to readers (e.g., legal documents, reports with appendices).
- 5After adding page numbers, verify that they don't overlap with existing content near the margins — adjust margin size if needed.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Add PDF page numbers tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Can I skip page numbering on the first page (cover page)?
- Yes — set the 'Start numbering from page' option to skip the cover page. You can also set a starting number higher than 1 if the document is part of a larger series.
- Can I add Roman numerals for front matter and switch to Arabic numbers for the main content?
- The current tool applies one numbering format throughout. For mixed numbering (Roman + Arabic), number each section separately using the 'start page' and 'end page' options, then merge the numbered sections.
- Will page numbers be added to existing blank pages?
- Yes — page numbers are added to all selected pages, including blank ones. Use Remove PDF Pages to delete blank pages before adding numbers if you don't want numbers on blank pages.
- Can I remove page numbers that were added by this tool?
- Page numbers added as a transparent overlay can be removed using the Edit PDF tool. However, numbers that are part of the original document content (not added as an overlay) are part of the page content and cannot be easily removed without editing each page individually.
