Section 80C allows up to ₹1.5 lakh deduction per year under the Old Tax Regime — saving ₹15,000–45,000 in annual tax. But the choice of instrument matters enormously: different 80C options have wildly different returns, lock-ins, and tax treatment at maturity.

The Instruments Compared

EPF: 8.25% tax-free (guaranteed, EEE). Automatic for salaried. The foundation — maximise this first. VPF (voluntary) at the same rate is an underused top-up option.

ELSS: 12–15% CAGR historically (equity, market risk). 3-year lock-in — shortest of all 80C. LTCG 12.5% above ₹1.25L exemption on redemption. Best for long-term wealth creation.

PPF: 7.1% tax-free (guaranteed, EEE). 15-year lock-in, partial access from year 7. Government-backed. Best conservative, completely tax-free component.

NPS Tier 1: 10–14% (market-linked, equity + debt mix). Locked until 60. 60% tax-free lump sum + 40% compulsory annuity. Unique: additional ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B) — beyond the 80C limit.

Tax-saving FD: 6.5–7.5% (fully taxable at slab). 5-year lock-in. Lowest post-tax returns for high-income earners. Only for ultra-conservative capital preservation.

LIC Traditional: 4–6% IRR (very poor). Technically EEE but the combined insurance-investment product is deeply inefficient. Always buy term insurance separately.

The Optimal Strategy

Under 45, 15+ year horizon: EPF (auto, 8.25%) → ELSS SIP ₹5,000–10,000/month → PPF top-up to fill remaining ₹1.5L limit. This combination offers guaranteed returns + equity growth + tax-free maturity.

The LIC trap: ₹30,000/year in a 20-year endowment plan → ₹8–10L maturity (4–5% IRR). Same in ELSS SIP at 12% → ₹30 lakh. The difference is 3× your money.

NPS for the extra ₹50K deduction: For 30% taxpayers, this saves ₹15,450/year in tax. The long lock-in is worth it for dedicated retirement savings.

Under New Regime: 80C unavailable. Invest the money in diversified equity mutual funds without lock-in constraints. New Regime liberates investment choices from tax-driven obligations.
