The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, long-term retirement savings scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). NPS Tier 1 is the primary pension account with a lock-in until age 60, while Tier 2 is a flexible savings account without lock-in. All salaried and self-employed individuals below 70 years can join NPS. It is particularly attractive for the unique additional tax benefit under Section 80CCD(1B) — an extra ₹50,000 deduction beyond the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit.

NPS invests across multiple asset classes: Equity (E), Government Bonds (G), Corporate Bonds (C), and Alternative Assets (A). Active Choice allows subscribers to select their own allocation, while Auto Choice (Lifecycle Fund) gradually shifts from equity to bonds as you approach retirement. Historically, NPS Tier 1 equity schemes have delivered 12–14% CAGR over 10+ years. Conservative estimates assume 8–10% for planning purposes.

At age 60, you can withdraw 60% of the corpus as a tax-free lump sum. The remaining 40% must be used to purchase an annuity from an IRDAI-registered annuity provider, which pays a monthly pension for life. Our calculator shows all three: total corpus, lump sum, annuity corpus, and estimated monthly pension based on the annuity rate you enter (typically 5–7% for a simple life annuity).

Common use cases

  • A 30-year-old government employee wants to estimate their NPS corpus and monthly pension at retirement at age 60.
  • A self-employed professional is evaluating NPS Tier 1 for the extra ₹50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B).
  • A corporate employee is comparing NPS with mutual fund SIP for retirement planning in terms of corpus and post-retirement income.
  • An HNI who has maxed out 80C and 80D wants to use NPS for the additional ₹50,000 deduction.
  • A young professional is calculating how much monthly pension a ₹5 lakh annual NPS contribution for 25 years can generate.

Tips for best results

  • 1Claim the extra ₹50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B) in the Old Regime — this reduces tax by ₹15,000 for those in the 30% bracket.
  • 2Choose Active Choice with 75% equity allocation if you are below 45. The aggressive growth in early years is vital for a large corpus.
  • 3NPS is not ideal if you need full liquidity — 40% must go to annuity regardless. Compare with ELSS + PPF + FD for a more liquid retirement strategy.
  • 4Partial withdrawal from NPS Tier 1 is allowed after 3 years for specific purposes: higher education, marriage, treatment of critical illness, disability, or purchase/construction of house.
  • 5Annuity rates offered by insurance companies range from 4–7%. For maximum pension, compare rates from 6–7 annuity service providers before choosing at retirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the NPS Calculator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
What happens to NPS if I die before retirement?
The entire NPS corpus is paid to the nominee as a lump sum, with no mandatory annuity purchase. The nominee need not use any portion to buy an annuity.
Can I withdraw from NPS before age 60?
Premature exit (before 60) is allowed after 3 years, but only 20% of the corpus can be withdrawn as lump sum — the remaining 80% must be used to buy an annuity. In the event of death, complete corpus is paid to the nominee.
What is the minimum monthly NPS contribution?
The minimum contribution is ₹500 per transaction and ₹1,000 per year for NPS Tier 1. There is no maximum limit for contributions, though tax benefits are capped at ₹2 lakh (₹1.5L under 80CCD(1) + ₹50K under 80CCD(1B)).
Are NPS returns guaranteed?
No. NPS is a market-linked product. Returns depend on the performance of the underlying pension fund and asset allocation chosen. Past returns (12–14% for equity schemes) are not a guarantee of future performance. For guaranteed returns, consider PPF or bank FDs.
