The Insurance + Investment Trap

Every year, millions of Indians buy investment-linked insurance plans (ULIPs, endowment, money-back) believing they are making a prudent financial choice. The reality: these products are among the worst financial instruments available — offering neither adequate protection nor good investment returns.

The fundamental flaw: mixing insurance and investment produces mediocre results on both fronts. A ₹10,000/month ULIP premium buys approximately ₹25 lakh cover. The same ₹10,000 could buy ₹1 crore term insurance (₹1,500/month) + invest ₹8,500 in mutual funds — generating 4× more cover and 2–3× better investment returns.

Pure Term Insurance: Maximum Protection, Minimum Cost

A pure term plan pays the sum assured only upon the insured's death within the policy term. No maturity benefit if you survive — but that's the point. The 'loss' of premium if you survive is the cost of protection, like car insurance you hope never to claim.

For a 30-year-old male, a 30-year term plan for ₹1 crore cover costs approximately ₹8,000–12,000 per year online. The same cover via ULIP would cost ₹1.5–2 lakh per year. Term insurance is 15–20× cheaper for the same protection.

ULIPs: High Cost, Low Return Hybrid

ULIPs (Unit Linked Insurance Plans) invest a portion of your premium in equity/debt funds while providing insurance cover. Charges: mortality charge (insurance cost), fund management fee (1.35% annual), allocation charges (0–5%), policy administration charges.

Net returns on ULIPs typically lag comparable mutual funds by 1.5–3% annually due to charges. Over 20 years, this compounding gap means a ULIP portfolio may be 25–40% smaller than a comparable mutual fund + term combination.

When ULIPs might work: if you're a disciplined investor who can't commit to separate term + SIP, or for tax planning in specific situations. ULIP maturity is tax-free under Section 10(10D) (for policies issued before Feb 1, 2021 or annual premium ≤ ₹2.5L for new policies).

Endowment and Money-Back: Worst of Both Worlds

Traditional endowment plans guarantee 4–5% returns with bonus. At 6% inflation, this is a real negative return. Over 20 years, your money grows to barely half its real purchasing power.

Money-back plans pay a percentage of sum assured at regular intervals during the policy term. The guaranteed 4–5% return is marketed as 'safe' but ignores that FD, PPF, and even liquid funds offer better guaranteed returns with zero insurance cost.

The simple rule: Buy term for protection. Buy mutual funds for wealth creation. Never mix the two.

If you already have a ULIP or endowment plan: check the surrender value, compare the remaining lock-in period, and if the surrender charge is small, exit and redirect the premium to term + mutual fund SIP.
