The Child Education Planner is a goal-based investment calculator that tells you exactly how much to invest monthly to fund your child's higher education. By combining the current cost of the targeted institution, years remaining until enrollment, education inflation, and expected investment return, the planner shows the inflated future cost and the monthly SIP required to reach it.
Education planning is unique because it is non-negotiable and time-bound — you cannot delay your child's college admission like you can retire a year later. This urgency makes it critical to start early and invest in growth-oriented instruments when the child is young. A parent starting when the child is 2 years old needs to invest roughly 4× less per month than one who starts at age 12 for the same goal.
For Indian families, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is the ideal tax-free instrument for girl children up to ₹1.5 lakh per year, earning 8.2% guaranteed. For additional corpus, ELSS mutual funds provide equity-linked growth with 80C deduction. As the goal approaches within 3 years, gradually move from equity to debt to lock in gains and protect against volatility.

Tips for best results
- 1Start before the child turns 5 — compounding works best over 12–18 year horizons
- 2For girl children, maximize SSY (₹1.5L/year, 8.2%, tax-free) before other instruments
- 3Combine SSY with ELSS for higher corpus — SSY for stable base + ELSS for growth
- 4Education goal money should be segregated — never dip into it for other expenses
- 5Review the plan annually as education costs escalate faster than expected
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Child Education Planner tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana good for education planning?
- Yes. SSY offers 8.2% guaranteed return, full EEE tax treatment (exempt on deposit, interest, and withdrawal), and can be withdrawn for higher education after age 18. Maximum ₹1.5 lakh per year per girl child. However, it is not suitable for goals before age 18.
- Should I use a children's mutual fund plan?
- Dedicated children's plans (like HDFC Childrens Gift Fund, SBI Magnum Children's Benefit) have a 5-year lock-in and decent track records, but regular diversified equity funds often perform better. The lock-in is the only benefit that prevents emotional withdrawals.
- What rate should I use for the expected return?
- Use 12% for ELSS/equity mutual funds over 10+ year horizons (conservative estimate; actual returns may be higher). Use 8.2% for SSY. Use a blended rate of 10–11% for a combined portfolio. Avoid over-optimistic assumptions of 15%+ over long periods.
- Can education loans supplement the corpus?
- Yes — plan to fund 80% through savings and the remaining 20% through an education loan. Section 80E allows full interest deduction on education loans for 8 years. For premier institutions (IITs, IIMs), banks readily provide loans up to ₹40 lakh without collateral.
