Cropping a PDF removes the white margins or extraneous content around the visible area of each page. Common use cases include trimming excessive margins from a scanned document, cutting off boilerplate headers/footers from a downloaded report, or resizing pages by removing unused white space to reduce file dimensions.
PDF cropping works by adjusting the crop box (a parameter in the PDF specification that tells viewers which portion of the page to display). The original content outside the crop box is hidden but not permanently deleted — you can re-expand the crop box later if needed. This makes PDF cropping a reversible operation in many viewers.
Presenting a PDF in a narrower format (by cropping wide margins) makes it easier to read on a mobile screen, improves the display when embedding PDF previews on websites, and reduces visual clutter when projecting a document on a screen. Cropped PDFs also have marginally smaller file sizes since external content references are simplified.

Common use cases
- Removing excessive top and bottom margins from a downloaded academic paper or e-book.
- Trimming the margins of a scanned document to remove black edges left by the scanner bed.
- Cropping out a confidential header or watermark on a section of a document before sharing.
- Reducing visible page dimensions to improve display on mobile or tablet screens.
- Creating a 'widescreen' layout by cropping the document to a 16:9 page ratio for projection.
Tips for best results
- 1PDF crop changes the crop box, not the media box — the original content is still there but hidden. If you need to permanently remove content (not just hide it), use a PDF editor to delete the content layer.
- 2Use the visual preview in the crop tool to drag the crop boundary to your exact desired area.
- 3For documents where the margin widths differ between odd and even pages, adjust the crop settings separately for odd and even pages.
- 4Be careful not to crop too aggressively — text near the edges of pages may be cut off if you remove too much margin.
- 5After cropping, verify the output PDF on multiple page types (first page, inside page, last page) to confirm consistent results.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Crop PDF tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Is cropping a PDF permanent?
- In most cases, no. PDF cropping adjusts the crop box metadata but leaves the original content intact within the file. Advanced PDF editors can restore the original margins. However, for sensitive content, use the Redact PDF tool instead of cropping to permanently remove hidden information.
- Can I crop only specific pages instead of all pages?
- Yes — you can specify a page range to crop, leaving other pages at their original dimensions.
- Why does the cropped PDF look correct in some viewers but show the original margins in others?
- This is because some PDF viewers (particularly older ones) ignore the crop box and display the full media box. The crop box is a 'viewing hint', not a security boundary. For permanent removal, use a PDF editor to delete the out-of-bounds content.
- Will cropping affect page numbering or document structure?
- No — cropping is purely a visual operation. The page count, document outline, bookmarks, and hyperlinks are all unaffected.
