CTC (Cost to Company) is the total amount an employer spends on an employee annually, including salary, employer PF contribution, health insurance, gratuity provision, and other perks. It is almost always higher than what you actually receive in your bank account — the difference being taxes, your own EPF contribution, professional tax, and other deductions. Understanding this breakdown is crucial when evaluating a job offer or negotiating a salary.

The key components of a typical Indian CTC structure are: Basic Salary (30–50% of CTC), House Rent Allowance (40–50% of Basic), Special Allowance (remaining amount), Employer PF Contribution (12% of Basic — this is part of CTC but not received as cash), and performance bonus. On the deduction side: Employee PF (12% of Basic), Professional Tax (up to ₹2,500/year depending on state), and income tax TDS (based on your regime and deductions).

This calculator does not include income tax TDS, as that depends on your investments, HRA exemption, and other deductions — use our Income Tax Calculator for that. But it accurately shows the CTC-to-in-hand gap from PF and professional tax, which is fixed and predictable. For a ₹12 lakh CTC at 40% basic in Karnataka, the monthly in-hand (after PF and PT but before income tax TDS) is approximately ₹83,800 — not ₹1,00,000 as one might naively assume.

Common use cases

  • A fresher evaluating a ₹6 lakh CTC job offer wants to know the actual monthly in-hand salary before accepting.
  • A professional comparing two job offers — ₹18 lakh with PF vs ₹16 lakh without PF — wants to calculate the real take-home difference.
  • An HR professional is explaining the salary slip components to a new joiner during onboarding.
  • Someone negotiating a promotion wants to understand how much of the CTC hike will actually reach their bank account.
  • A family planning their monthly budget based on an expected job offer needs the actual take-home number, not the CTC.

Tips for best results

  • 1When comparing job offers, always calculate in-hand salary. A higher CTC can result in lower take-home if it includes more variable pay, higher PF contribution, or non-cash benefits.
  • 2If PF deduction is optional (allowed for employees with basic > ₹15,000/month), opting out increases in-hand by 12% of basic but reduces your long-term savings. Carefully weigh the trade-off.
  • 3Ask employers for the salary structure breakup before accepting an offer. A high-HRA structure (in metro cities) can save significant income tax under the Old Regime.
  • 4Variable pay (performance bonus) is part of CTC but not guaranteed. Count only fixed CTC components when calculating your monthly budget.
  • 5Employer PF contributions are part of your CTC but only received at retirement or job change. Do not spend based on CTC — budget based on in-hand salary only.

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
Why is my in-hand salary so much less than my CTC?
CTC includes costs the employer bears on your behalf: employer PF (12% of basic), employer health insurance premium, gratuity provision, and sometimes employee stock options. Your salary slip deducts your own PF (12% of basic), professional tax, and income tax TDS before crediting the remainder to your account.
Is professional tax mandatory in all states?
No. Professional tax is levied by state governments and only applicable in certain states including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and a few others. Delhi, Rajasthan, UP, and several northeastern states do not levy professional tax.
Does employer PF contribution form part of my EPF corpus?
Yes. Of the employer's 12% contribution, 3.67% goes to your EPF account (building your corpus) and 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS), which provides a monthly pension at retirement. Both components are part of your CTC.
How is income tax TDS calculated in this calculator?
This calculator does not include TDS, as it varies based on your investments, deductions, and regime choice. Use our Income Tax Calculator to estimate TDS, then subtract it from the in-hand amount shown here for a complete picture.
