The Education Cost Calculator helps parents plan ahead for their child's higher education by accounting for the significant inflation in Indian education costs. Unlike general CPI inflation of 5–6%, education inflation in India — especially for professional courses like engineering, medicine, MBA, and international programs — has historically ranged from 10–12% per year. This means that an engineering college costing ₹10 lakh today will cost over ₹25 lakh in 10 years.
Our calculator takes the current cost of the targeted education, adjusts it for education inflation over the years remaining until the goal, and then calculates the monthly SIP or lump sum needed today to accumulate that corpus. The tool also factors in any existing savings you have earmarked for education, showing the exact shortfall that needs to be funded through new investments.
The best instruments for education funding include Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (8.2%, EEE, for girls), ELSS mutual funds (12–14% long-term CAGR, 3-year lock-in, 80C benefits), and equity-oriented hybrid funds (10–12% CAGR) for medium-term goals. As the goal approaches within 2 years, progressively shift to debt funds to protect the accumulated corpus from market volatility.

- Planning for MBBS or medical college which can cost ₹20–80 lakh today

Tips for best results
- 1Start as early as possible — a 15-year SIP with 12% returns needs only 25% of a 5-year SIP amount
- 2Use education inflation of 10% for domestic courses; 12% for international programs
- 3Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is the best risk-free option for girl children up to ₹1.5L/year
- 4Keep education fund separate from retirement savings — don't mix goals in one investment
- 5Target 80–90% of projected cost through investments; the remaining 10–20% can be funded via education loans if needed
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Education Cost Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Why is 10% education inflation used instead of 6%?
- General CPI is 5–6% but education costs in India — especially private engineering, medical, and management colleges — have risen 10–15% annually due to infrastructure investment, faculty costs, and increasing demand. Top B-schools now charge ₹25–30 lakh for a 2-year MBA, up from ₹8–10 lakh a decade ago.
- Should I invest in PPF or mutual funds for education?
- For goals over 10 years away, equity mutual funds (ELSS, flexi cap, large cap) offer significantly better returns (12–14% CAGR vs 7.1% PPF). For goals under 5 years, debt funds or FDs are safer. A hybrid approach — equity now, gradually shifting to debt as the goal approaches — works best.
- Are education loans a good backup?
- Education loans up to ₹40 lakh are available at 8–12% interest with moratorium during study. Section 80E allows full deduction of interest paid (no limit) for 8 years. However, interest-free periods still accrue interest in many cases, so investing in advance remains the better strategy.
- What if I start saving only 5 years before the goal?
- With only 5 years, avoid high-risk equity funds. Use balanced advantage funds or aggressive hybrid funds. Consider a larger lump sum contribution if you have savings to deploy. Alternatively, plan for partial funding via education loans for the remaining corpus.
