Life insurance is not for the person who dies — it's for the people who depend on them. The fundamental purpose of life insurance is income replacement: ensuring that if the primary earner passes away, their dependants can maintain their standard of living, repay outstanding debts, fund children's education, and meet other long-term financial goals without the breadwinner's income.
There are two primary methods to calculate the right life insurance cover. The Human Life Value (HLV) method estimates the present value of all future income the person would have earned — a 30-year-old earning ₹12 lakh/year for 30 more working years, discounted at 6% real return, needs approximately ₹1.65 crore in cover (adjusted for the expense ratio the family actually uses). The Income Replacement method calculates the corpus needed at a safe withdrawal rate: ₹12 lakh/year at 6% return requires a ₹2 crore corpus.
Outstanding loans — especially home loans — must be added to the cover calculation. If you have a ₹40 lakh home loan outstanding and die tomorrow, your family inherits both the asset and the liability. A term insurance policy should cover this loan in full. Most financial advisors recommend cover of at least 10–15× annual income plus outstanding loans minus existing savings.

Common use cases
- A 35-year-old with a ₹1.5 crore home loan, ₹15 lakh annual income, and a spouse and two children wants to know the right term insurance cover.
- A new parent is calculating the cover needed to ensure their child's education and spouse's livelihood if something happens to them.
- A professional reviewing their existing ₹50 lakh policy wants to know if it's adequate given income growth and new liabilities.
- A self-employed person with no employer-provided insurance is buying term insurance for the first time.
- A financial planner is benchmarking a client's total insurance cover against the HLV method.
Tips for best results
- 1Buy only pure term insurance — not ULIPs, endowment plans, or money-back policies. A ₹1 crore term plan for a 30-year-old costs ₹8,000–12,000/year, leaving money available for actual investments.
- 2Buy term insurance early. A 25-year-old pays 30–40% less premium than a 35-year-old for the same cover. Premiums for a healthy non-smoker at 25 are remarkably affordable.
- 3Choose adequate tenure — cover should last until your dependants can support themselves (at minimum until your youngest child is 25 and any home loan is paid off).
- 4Consider a ₹1 crore policy from two different insurers rather than a single ₹2 crore policy — this diversifies claim settlement risk and may be underwritten better.
- 5Add critical illness and accidental death benefit riders — they are inexpensive and significantly expand coverage for events that may not result in death but severely impair income.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Life Insurance Needs Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- How much life insurance is enough?
- A common rule of thumb is 15–20× annual income plus outstanding loans minus existing assets. The HLV method (used in this calculator) provides a more precise number based on your specific income, years to retirement, and family expense ratio.
- What is the difference between term insurance and whole life insurance?
- Term insurance provides pure death benefit for a specific period (10–40 years) at low premiums. Whole life insurance (ULIPs, endowment plans) combines insurance with savings/investment — but the coverage is expensive relative to the premiums and returns are typically poor. Always buy term insurance separately from investments.
- Is term insurance premium eligible for tax deduction?
- Yes. Term insurance premiums are eligible for Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh per year. The death benefit received by nominees is fully tax-exempt under Section 10(10D), subject to conditions.
- Should I buy online or through an agent?
- Online term plans (bought directly from the insurer's website) are 15–30% cheaper than identical policies sold through agents, as there is no commission. Compare policies on aggregator platforms for transparency. However, ensure you fill the proposal form accurately — non-disclosure at the time of purchase is the leading reason for claim rejection.
