National Savings Certificate (NSC) is a fixed-income investment scheme offered by the Government of India through post offices and authorised banks. It is a 5-year scheme with a current interest rate of 7.7% per annum (Q1 FY 2025-26), compounded annually and paid at maturity. The initial investment qualifies for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh per financial year.
A unique feature of NSC is that the accrued interest for years 1–4 is considered as reinvested and also qualifies for 80C deduction in those respective years. This means an investor in the 30% tax bracket can claim 80C on both the original investment and the subsequent years' interest, making the effective post-tax return higher than the nominal 7.7%. However, Year 5 interest is not reinvested — it's paid out and is taxable.
NSC is available in denominations starting from ₹1,000 (no upper limit), making it accessible for all investors. It is risk-free (government guarantee), has no TDS at source, and provides predictable returns. NSC is ideal for conservative investors looking to exhaust the 80C limit alongside EPF/PPF, or for those who need a fixed-income instrument to balance an equity-heavy portfolio.

Tips for best results
- 1NSC interest for years 1–4 reinvested automatically qualifies for 80C deduction — declare it on your ITR as '80C: NSC interest reinvested' to maximise the benefit.
- 2There is no premature closure provision for NSC under normal circumstances. Only allowed in specific cases: death of account holder, court order, or forfeiture.
- 3NSC can be pledged as collateral for bank loans, making it a versatile instrument for those who need liquidity.
- 4Compare NSC with tax-saving FDs (also 5-year lock-in, 80C eligible). NSC offers annual compounding at 7.7% while some bank tax-saving FDs offer 7.5–8% with quarterly compounding — calculate the effective maturity to compare.
- 5NSC certificates can be transferred from one person to another (once, as a gift), but this doesn't restart the 5-year lock-in from a new date.

- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the NSC Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Can I buy NSC online?
- Yes. NSC can be purchased online through the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) app, internet banking of authorised banks, or physically at post office counters. An Aadhaar-linked savings account is required.
- What is the difference between NSC and Kisan Vikas Patra?
- Both are post office savings schemes. NSC (5 years, 7.7%) offers 80C deduction and annual compounding. KVP (7.5%, currently doubles in ~115 months) has no 80C deduction and is available for longer tenures. NSC is preferred for tax-saving; KVP for a specific doubling goal.
- Is NSC interest taxable?
- Yes. Years 1–4 interest is deemed reinvested and reported as income, but simultaneously claimed as 80C deduction — net tax impact is minimal. Year 5 interest is taxable at your slab rate with no offset. TDS is not deducted at source.
- Can I invest more than ₹1.5 lakh in NSC?
- Yes, there is no upper investment limit for NSC. However, only ₹1.5 lakh per financial year is eligible for 80C deduction. Amounts above ₹1.5L earn the same 7.7% return without additional tax benefits.
