Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS or PO MIS) is one of India's most popular income-generating savings instruments, particularly for retirees and senior citizens who need regular monthly cash flow. Unlike most savings schemes that pay interest at maturity, PO MIS pays interest every month — providing a guaranteed, predictable monthly income for a 5-year tenure.
The current interest rate is 7.4% per annum (Q1 FY 2025-26), paid monthly. The maximum investment is ₹9 lakh for a single account and ₹15 lakh for a joint account. At maximum investment of ₹9 lakh, you receive ₹5,550/month (₹66,600/year) in guaranteed income. For retirees or those with large lump sums seeking capital preservation with regular income, PO MIS offers one of the highest guaranteed monthly payouts available in India.
PO MIS interest is fully taxable at the investor's slab rate, but TDS is not deducted at source (unlike bank FDs for amounts above ₹40,000). The principal is returned in full at maturity after 5 years. Premature closure is allowed after 1 year with a 1% deduction on principal, and after 3 years with a 2% penalty waived (no deduction). The scheme can be extended for another 5 years at the prevailing rate on maturity.

Common use cases
- A retiree with ₹15 lakh in savings wants to know the monthly income from maximum PO MIS investment.
- A family is using PO MIS as part of a retirement income ladder, complementing pension and rental income.
- An investor is comparing SCSS (quarterly payout, 8.2%) vs PO MIS (monthly payout, 7.4%) for senior citizen income planning.
- Someone with a fixed surplus is looking for a capital-safe instrument that provides regular monthly income for 5 years.
- A financial planner is building a 'bucket strategy' for a retired client using PO MIS for the short-term bucket.
Tips for best results
- 1Open a joint account to access the ₹15 lakh limit instead of ₹9 lakh (single). A spouse as joint holder doubles the investment ceiling.
- 2PO MIS interest is not compounded — it's simple interest paid monthly. If you don't spend the monthly interest, re-invest it in a liquid fund or RD to earn compound returns on it.
- 3PO MIS does not qualify for 80C deduction. It is a pure income instrument, not a tax-saving one. Pair it with PPF or NSC for 80C benefits.
- 4File Form 15G/15H with the post office to avoid TDS if your total income is below the taxable threshold (even though TDS is not typically deducted from PO MIS).
- 5For senior citizens comparing options: SCSS at 8.2% (quarterly payout) vs PO MIS at 7.4% (monthly payout). SCSS pays more but has a ₹30L investment ceiling and quarterly cadence. PO MIS has a lower ceiling but monthly cadence.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Post Office MIS Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Is PO MIS available at banks?
- PO MIS is only available at post office branches. It is not offered by banks. You can open an account at any post office nationwide.
- What happens if I miss a monthly interest collection?
- Unclaimed monthly interest in PO MIS accounts earns no additional interest — it just accumulates in your post office savings account. You should have a linked savings account for automatic credit.
- Can I invest more than ₹15 lakh in PO MIS?
- No. The maximum investment ceiling is ₹9 lakh per single account and ₹15 lakh per joint account. You can open one single account and one joint account (with a spouse), but the combined limit across all PO MIS accounts per individual is ₹9 lakh (single capacity portion).
- Is PO MIS better than an RD for regular savings?
- PO MIS is for lump sum deployment generating monthly income. RD is for systematic monthly deposits building a corpus. They serve different purposes — PO MIS for capital already available; RD for regular savings from income.
