Retirement planning is arguably the most important financial goal — it's the one you can't borrow your way out of. The retirement calculator helps you determine two things: (1) how large a corpus you need at retirement to fund your lifestyle, and (2) how much you need to invest every month from today to build that corpus. Both depend heavily on inflation, expected investment returns, and how long your retirement is expected to last.
The calculator accounts for the inflation-adjusted cost of living at retirement. If your current monthly expenses are ₹50,000, and inflation averages 6% for the next 25 years, you'll need approximately ₹2.15 lakh/month at retirement just to maintain the same standard of living. The corpus needed is calculated using the present value of an inflation-adjusted annuity — essentially, how big a fund at retirement will generate growing withdrawals for the expected retirement duration.
For building the corpus, the calculator assumes you invest a fixed SIP each month at a specified pre-retirement return (typically 12% for equity-oriented portfolios). Post-retirement, the corpus is assumed to earn a conservative 7–8% (deployed in a mix of debt, balanced, and annuity instruments). Adjusting these assumptions with the sliders shows you the sensitivity — small changes in return rate or retirement age make a dramatic difference in the required monthly SIP.

Common use cases
- A 30-year-old software engineer wants to retire at 55 with ₹60,000/month of expenses and needs to know the required monthly SIP starting today.
- A 45-year-old professional with an existing corpus of ₹20 lakh wants to know if they are on track for retirement at 60.
- A couple planning joint retirement wants to estimate a combined corpus that supports ₹1.2 lakh/month for 30 years post-retirement.
- A freelancer with no EPF is planning retirement entirely through personal investments and needs a complete savings target.
- A young investor is stress-testing retirement plans by comparing outcomes at 10%, 12%, and 15% expected pre-retirement returns.
Tips for best results
- 1Start as early as possible. The mathematical advantage of starting at 25 vs 35 for the same retirement goal can halve the required monthly SIP.
- 2Use a 6% inflation assumption for general expenses but 10–12% for healthcare expenses, which tend to inflate faster.
- 3Aim for a post-retirement portfolio that maintains 30–40% in equities even after retirement to keep pace with inflation over a 25–30 year retirement.
- 4The '4% rule' (withdraw 4% of corpus annually) is a useful starting point but may be conservative for Indian retirees facing higher inflation. Use 3–3.5% for safety.
- 5Build retirement savings in tax-efficient instruments: EPF, PPF, NPS Tier 1, and ELSS mutual funds provide the best tax treatment for long-term retirement accumulation.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Retirement Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- How much corpus do I need to retire comfortably?
- A simple rule of thumb: aim for 25–33× your annual retirement expenses. If you need ₹60,000/month (₹7.2 lakh/year), target a corpus of ₹1.8–2.4 crore. For higher inflation protection and longer life expectancy, use 33×.
- Should I account for EPF and PPF in my retirement corpus?
- Yes. Add your projected EPF, PPF, and other dedicated retirement savings to the corpus target to calculate the shortfall — that's what you need to build through additional SIPs.
- What return rate should I assume post-retirement?
- Use 7–8% for a conservative mixed portfolio (debt funds, balanced advantage funds, and annuity). Avoid assuming high equity returns post-retirement, as sequence-of-returns risk (a market crash early in retirement) can be devastating.
- What is the FIRE concept and how does it relate to this calculator?
- FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is about building a corpus large enough to support living expenses indefinitely through investment returns — typically targeting 25–30× annual expenses. Set the retirement age below 55 and life expectancy to 90+ to plan an early retirement scenario.
