Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) is the highest-yielding government-backed savings scheme currently available in India, offering 8.2% per annum (Q1 FY 2025-26), paid quarterly. It is specifically designed for senior citizens (60+) who need guaranteed, regular income after retirement. The scheme offers deposits up to ₹30 lakh, which at 8.2% generates ₹2.46 lakh annually (₹61,500 per quarter) — making it one of the best risk-free income instruments.

SCSS is available to individuals aged 60 and above. Those who have retired on superannuation between 55–60 can also invest within one month of receiving their retirement benefits. Defence personnel who have retired can invest from age 50. The primary tenure is 5 years, extendable by 3 years after maturity. Multiple SCSS accounts are allowed per individual, but the combined balance across all SCSS accounts cannot exceed ₹30 lakh.

The initial investment qualifies for Section 80C deduction (up to ₹1.5 lakh). Quarterly interest is fully taxable at the investor's slab rate and TDS at 10% is deducted if interest exceeds ₹50,000 per year (compared to ₹40,000 for non-seniors). SCSS accounts can be opened at post offices and authorised banks including SBI, Bank of Baroda, and Canara Bank.

Common use cases

  • A 62-year-old retiree received ₹30 lakh as EPF gratuity and wants to know the quarterly SCSS income.
  • A senior couple wants to maximise their combined SCSS investment for monthly household income.
  • A retired government employee is comparing SCSS (8.2%) vs a bank senior citizen FD (8%) for interest income.
  • A financial planner is using SCSS as the anchor instrument in a retiree's income portfolio.
  • A senior citizen wants to know if extending SCSS for 3 more years at maturity makes sense vs redeploying the capital.

Tips for best results

  • 1Invest the maximum ₹30 lakh immediately if eligible — at 8.2%, this generates ₹2.46 lakh annually in guaranteed income. The rate can change quarterly, so locking in now is advantageous if rates decline.
  • 2TDS at 10% is deducted on quarterly interest if total annual SCSS interest exceeds ₹50,000. Submit Form 15H if your total income is below the taxable limit to avoid TDS.
  • 3Plan for the extension at maturity — at 5 years plus 3-year extension (8 years total), the scheme generates excellent cumulative returns with full capital preservation.
  • 4SCSS qualifies for 80C deduction on the investment amount (up to ₹1.5L) — use this space for SCSS if you've already exhausted other 80C avenues.
  • 5Open SCSS at both a post office and a bank — compare operational convenience. Bank branches may be easier for TDS tracking and interest certificate issuance.
