Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) are government securities denominated in grams of gold, issued by the Reserve Bank of India on behalf of the Government of India. They are the most tax-efficient way to invest in gold in India — combining gold price appreciation with 2.5% annual interest, while eliminating storage costs, making charges, and capital gains tax on maturity.

The SGB Calculator helps you estimate the maturity value of your SGB investment at the 8-year mark, including the cumulative interest earned and the gold price appreciation component. You can input your purchase price per gram, current gold price, and number of units (grams) to see how your investment has grown and what you'll receive at maturity.

Key SGB facts for 2025-26: SGBs are issued in tranches throughout the year at prices set by RBI (typically close to market gold price). The 2.5% interest is paid semi-annually to your bank account and is taxable as per your income slab. Capital gains on redemption at maturity (8 years) are completely tax-free — this is SGB's biggest advantage over Gold ETFs (which attract 20% LTCG with indexation after 2 years).

Tips for best results

  • 1Buy SGBs during RBI issue windows — prices may be ₹50/gram lower with online discount
  • 2Hold to maturity (8 years) for capital gains tax exemption — premature exit (after 5 years) attracts 20% LTCG
  • 3Reinvest the semi-annual interest (2.5%) into more SGB units or equity SIPs
  • 4Maximum purchase: 4 kg/individual, 20 kg/trust per FY — plan allocations if near limits
  • 5SGBs can be pledged as collateral for loans — useful as liquid asset in emergencies

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Calculator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
Are SGB capital gains really tax-free?
Yes — capital gains arising from redemption of SGBs at maturity (8 years) are completely exempt from capital gains tax under Section 47(viic) of the Income Tax Act. However, the 2.5% annual interest is taxable as per your income slab. Premature redemption (after 5 years but before 8) is allowed but attracts 20% LTCG with indexation.
What happens if gold price falls?
SGBs are denominated in grams of gold — your investment value moves with gold prices. If gold falls, your SGB value falls too. The 2.5% annual interest provides some cushion against gold price decline. Unlike physical gold, SGBs have zero storage risk or theft risk, and you always receive the full market gold price at maturity.
Can I sell SGBs before 8 years?
Yes — premature redemption is allowed after 5 years on coupon payment dates (April 1 and October 31 each year). You can also sell SGBs on the secondary market (BSE/NSE) anytime, but liquidity is limited and prices may be at a discount. The most efficient strategy is holding to maturity for tax-free capital gains.
How do SGBs compare to Gold ETFs?
SGBs offer 2.5% extra annual interest + tax-free maturity gains. Gold ETFs offer better liquidity (sell anytime at market price) but attract 20% LTCG after 2 years (post-2023 budget). For long-term gold allocation (5–8+ years), SGBs are clearly superior. For tactical or short-term gold exposure, Gold ETFs/FOFs are more flexible.
