Simple interest is the most straightforward form of interest calculation: interest is charged only on the original principal amount, not on accumulated interest. The formula is SI = (P × R × T) / 100, where P is the principal, R is the annual interest rate, and T is time in years. Simple interest grows linearly — if ₹1 lakh earns ₹8,000 in the first year at 8%, it also earns exactly ₹8,000 in the second year, ₹8,000 in the third, and so on.
Simple interest is used for specific financial products in India: short-term personal loans from some NBFCs, certain gold loans, inter-company loans, and some retail lending products. It's also used as a baseline for comparing the 'true cost' of credit, since simple interest is always lower than compound interest for the same rate and period. Many government schemes and informal credit arrangements also use simple interest for transparency.
For most bank deposits and loans, compound interest (not simple interest) is applied. A bank FD advertised at 7% uses quarterly compounding, giving a slightly higher effective return. But for loans like credit cards or some personal loans that compound monthly, the actual amount paid is significantly more than a simple interest calculation would suggest. Understanding simple interest helps you catch when a lender is understating the true cost of borrowing.

Common use cases
- A student wants to quickly verify a lender's quoted monthly interest on a short-term education loan.
- A shopkeeper has given a ₹2 lakh interest-free credit to a supplier and wants to calculate the implied interest cost for tax purposes.
- A school teacher is explaining interest concepts to Class 8 students using a relatable example.
- A landlord lent ₹5 lakh to a tenant at 6% simple interest for 2 years and wants to calculate the exact repayment.
- A finance student is comparing SI vs CI on the same principal to understand the compounding effect.
Tips for best results
- 1Use simple interest for rough mental estimates. If an investment doubles in 10 years, it implies approximately 10% simple interest or ~7.2% compound interest.
- 2When a lender quotes 'flat rate' interest (common for 2-wheeler loans), they mean simple interest on the original principal. This is effectively double the interest cost of a reducing balance loan. Always ask for the Annualised Percentage Rate (APR).
- 3Simple interest works in your favour for short-term deposits: a 90-day FD computes interest as P × R × 90/365, which may differ slightly from the bank's quarterly compounding.
- 4Cross-check auto loan flat rate quotes using this calculator — a 9% flat rate on a 3-year loan equals approximately 16–17% annual reducing balance interest.
- 5Interest earned on loans given to family members or friends should be documented at market rates to avoid income tax complications under Section 56(2).
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Simple Interest Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- Which Indian financial products use simple interest?
- Gold loans (most NBFCs), some short-term personal loans, inter-company deposits, and Kisan Credit Card (KCC) overdraft components use simple interest. Most bank savings accounts calculate daily interest on a simple basis, though it's credited quarterly.
- How do I convert a flat rate to an effective rate?
- A rough rule of thumb: the effective rate ≈ flat rate × 1.9. So a 10% flat rate equals approximately 19% effective annual rate. For precision, use an EMI calculator with reducing balance and compare total interest paid.
- What is the maturity value if ₹50,000 is invested at 6% simple interest for 4 years?
- SI = (50,000 × 6 × 4) / 100 = ₹12,000. Maturity value = ₹50,000 + ₹12,000 = ₹62,000. Enter these values in the calculator to verify.
- Can simple interest be negative?
- No. Simple interest is always a positive value — interest is added on top of the principal. Negative real returns are possible in the context of inflation, but the nominal SI formula always yields a positive interest amount.
