Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed small savings scheme introduced under the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' initiative in 2015. It is designed for parents/guardians of girl children to build a tax-free corpus for education and marriage expenses. The scheme currently offers 8.2% interest per annum (Q1 FY 2025-26) — the highest among all government small savings schemes — compounded annually.

An SSY account can be opened for a girl child below the age of 10 at any post office or authorised bank. A maximum of two accounts are allowed per family (one per girl child), with an exception for twins/triplets. The minimum annual deposit is ₹250 and the maximum is ₹1.5 lakh. Deposits are eligible for Section 80C deduction. The account has a 21-year maturity period from opening, with deposits made only for the first 15 years.

SSY is an EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) instrument — contributions qualify for 80C, interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is completely tax-free. Partial withdrawal (up to 50% of the previous year's balance) is allowed when the girl turns 18, for education purposes. Full withdrawal is allowed at 21 (maturity) or at the time of marriage after age 18.

Common use cases

  • Parents of a newborn girl want to start investing ₹1.5 lakh annually for 15 years to build a tax-free education/marriage fund.
  • Grandparents want to open an SSY account for their granddaughter's future.
  • A family is comparing SSY returns vs a mutual fund SIP for a girl child's education goal in 18 years.
  • Parents want to see how much they need to deposit annually to build a specific corpus by the time their daughter turns 21.
  • An investor is maximising tax savings by opening an SSY account to use the 80C deduction alongside PPF.

Tips for best results

  • 1Deposit before April 5 each year to earn interest for the entire financial year on that year's contribution.
  • 2Maximise deposits to ₹1.5 lakh per year — at 8.2% over 21 years, this creates a corpus of approximately ₹69 lakh, nearly entirely tax-free.
  • 3SSY can be used alongside PPF — the combined 80C space (₹1.5L) can cover both if you split wisely (e.g., ₹75K each), or if contributions are in the girl's parent's name for SSY and the parent's own name for PPF.
  • 4The account becomes inactive if the annual minimum deposit of ₹250 is not made. Revive it with ₹50 penalty per inactive year plus the minimum deposit.
  • 5After age 18, the girl herself becomes the account holder. Ensure the account details are updated with her own KYC documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
Can I open an SSY account if my daughter is older than 10?
No. SSY accounts can only be opened for girl children below 10 years of age. This age limit is strictly enforced.
What happens to the SSY account if the girl gets married before 21?
The account can be closed on the occasion of marriage after the girl turns 18. She can withdraw the full balance. The account cannot be closed for marriage before age 18.
Is SSY better than a mutual fund SIP for a girl child's education?
SSY offers guaranteed, tax-free returns at 8.2% — suitable for the conservative component of a financial plan. Equity mutual funds have historically returned 12–15% CAGR over 15+ years but with market risk. A combination of SSY (guaranteed, tax-free) + ELSS SIP (market-linked, tax-saving) is often recommended.
Can NRIs invest in SSY?
No. SSY is available only to resident Indian citizens. If the account holder becomes an NRI after account opening, the account must be closed.
