A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP or increasing SIP) is a variation where you increase your monthly SIP amount by a fixed percentage every year. For example, if you start with ₹10,000/month and step up by 10% each year, your SIP becomes ₹11,000 in year 2, ₹12,100 in year 3, and so on. This aligns naturally with annual salary increments — as your income grows, your investments grow in proportion.
The mathematical advantage of step-up SIPs over flat SIPs is significant. Consider a flat SIP of ₹10,000/month for 20 years at 12% — the maturity is approximately ₹96 lakh. Now consider a step-up SIP starting at ₹10,000 with a 10% annual increment for the same period — the maturity is approximately ₹1.8 crore, nearly double, while your early-year contributions are lower than a flat comparison SIP of ₹17,000/month would be.
Step-up SIPs are offered by most AMCs as a feature you can set during SIP registration. You can choose an annual increment in percentage (5%, 10%, 15%) or a fixed amount. The step-up happens annually on the anniversary of your SIP start date. This is one of the most underused and most powerful wealth-building tools available to Indian investors.

Common use cases
- A 25-year-old starting their career with ₹5,000/month wants to build a retirement corpus by increasing SIP every year with salary hikes.
- A professional who got a 15% hike wants to invest the incremental income using a step-up SIP.
- An investor is comparing the outcome of a flat ₹20,000 SIP vs a step-up SIP starting at ₹10,000 with 15% annual increment.
- A financial planner is demonstrating to a client how a 10% annual SIP step-up over 25 years can build a ₹5 crore corpus.
- Someone is deciding the optimal starting SIP amount, knowing they'll step up 10% per year and target a specific corpus.
Tips for best results
- 1Even a 5% annual step-up meaningfully increases your corpus vs a flat SIP. A 10% step-up (matching typical salary growth) nearly doubles the outcome over 20 years.
- 2Set up the step-up feature when creating the SIP — most platforms (Zerodha Coin, MF Central, Groww) support it natively so it's automatic, requiring no manual action each year.
- 3Use the step-up calculator to find the minimum starting SIP given your target corpus — often the number is lower than a flat SIP calculation would suggest.
- 4If you miss a year's increment (e.g., no hike), you can manually increase the SIP the following year to compensate without affecting the overall plan significantly.
- 5Combine step-up SIP with the power of long tenure — starting at 25 with a 10% step-up and running for 35 years produces dramatically better results than starting at 35 for 25 years even with a higher starting SIP.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Konnect2Tools free?
- Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
- Do my files leave my device?
- Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
- Is the Step-Up SIP Calculator tool safe to use?
- Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
- How is step-up SIP different from regular SIP?
- A regular (flat) SIP invests the same amount every month for the entire tenure. A step-up SIP increases the monthly amount annually, so later years have higher contributions. The step-up SIP leverages increasing income to build a larger corpus for the same years of investing.
- Can I set up a step-up SIP in any mutual fund?
- Most Indian AMCs and investment platforms support step-up SIPs. You can set an annual percentage increment or a fixed rupee increment when creating the SIP mandate. Check with your specific platform for available options.
- Is there a maximum step-up percentage?
- There is no formal maximum, but practically 25–30% annual step-up is the upper limit most people can sustain. Beyond this, the later-year SIP amounts become very large. Most investors use 5–15% annual increments, aligned with salary growth.
- What if I cannot afford the increased SIP one year?
- You can pause the step-up or modify the SIP amount at any time without penalties. Missing one year's increment affects the final corpus marginally — it does not derail the plan. Resume the increment in the next year.
