A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) is the withdrawal equivalent of a SIP — instead of investing a fixed amount every month, you withdraw a fixed amount every month from your mutual fund corpus. SWP is the most efficient way to generate regular monthly income from a mutual fund investment in retirement, combining the tax efficiency of capital gains with continued investment growth on the remaining corpus.

Unlike a fixed deposit that depletes its interest (and requires reinvestment of principal), an SWP from an equity or balanced fund can generate income indefinitely if the withdrawal rate is set below the portfolio's long-term expected return. The '4% rule' — withdrawing 4% of the initial corpus annually — is widely cited as a safe withdrawal rate for 30-year retirements. On a ₹1 crore corpus, this means ₹33,333/month, adjusted annually.

SWP is also tax-efficient compared to FD interest. Each SWP withdrawal from an equity mutual fund held over 1 year is treated as LTCG — taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh exemption per year. A significant portion of each withdrawal is return of capital (cost basis), making the actual taxable gain much smaller than the total withdrawal. Compare this to FD interest, which is 100% taxable at your slab rate.

Common use cases

  • A retiree with ₹50 lakh in mutual funds wants to know how much they can withdraw monthly for 25 years without depleting the corpus.
  • A 60-year-old is planning a ₹40,000/month SWP from a balanced advantage fund and wants to check sustainability.
  • An investor is comparing SWP from equity fund (12.5% LTCG) vs FD interest (30% slab rate) for post-tax income efficiency.
  • Someone inheriting ₹1 crore wants to use SWP for monthly income while keeping the corpus growing.
  • A financial planner is designing a bucket strategy using SWP for the post-retirement income phase.

Tips for best results

  • 1Keep SWP withdrawal rate below 5–6% of initial corpus annually for the corpus to sustain over 25–30 years. Higher withdrawal rates risk corpus depletion if markets underperform.
  • 2Use Balanced Advantage Funds (BAFs) for SWP — they dynamically manage equity-debt allocation and provide more stable returns than pure equity funds for income withdrawal.
  • 3SWP triggers capital gains tax only on the gain component of each withdrawal — which is typically a small fraction. Consult a CA to calculate your effective tax rate on SWP vs FD interest.
  • 4Keep 12–24 months of expenses in a liquid fund or savings account as a buffer. This allows you to pause the SWP during market corrections without selling at losses.
  • 5Increase SWP amount by 5–6% every year to maintain purchasing power against inflation, if the corpus growth rate supports it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the SWP Calculator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
What is the difference between SWP and dividend from mutual funds?
SWP is a planned withdrawal of a fixed amount. Dividends (now called 'income distribution cum capital withdrawal' or IDCW in India) are distributions at the fund manager's discretion. SWP gives you more control — you choose the amount and frequency. SWP is also more tax-efficient than IDCW, which is fully taxable at your slab rate.
What return rate should I assume for SWP corpus?
Use 8% for balanced advantage/conservative hybrid funds and 10–11% for flexi-cap or large-cap equity funds for long-term SWP planning. These are moderate assumptions — actual returns vary by market cycle.
Can I increase or decrease the SWP amount?
Yes. SWP amounts can be modified at any time through your AMC or investment platform. You can pause, reduce, or increase the withdrawal amount with no penalties.
What happens if the corpus runs out during SWP?
Once the corpus is zero, SWP stops automatically — no negative balance is possible. The calculator shows how long the corpus lasts at your chosen withdrawal rate and helps you determine a sustainable amount.
