Why Different Universities Have Different Formulas
India has no standardized national formula for converting CGPA to percentage. Each university sets its own grading scale and conversion formula based on their credit system and academic policies. This causes significant confusion for students applying for jobs, higher education, or government exams that require percentage.
Many job applications and university admissions ask for percentage. If you studied at VTU or Anna University, you need to know the official conversion formula to accurately represent your CGPA as a percentage. Using the wrong formula can make your percentage appear 5–15% lower or higher than the official value.
CGPA to percentage conversions are increasingly being accepted directly. UPSC, many PSUs, and private sector companies now accept CGPA and convert internally. However, for bank exams, state government jobs, and direct applications, knowing the conversion formula is still essential.
University-wise Conversion Formulas 2025
VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka): Percentage = CGPA × 10. Simple multiplication. A CGPA of 8.5 = 85%. VTU updated to 10-point scale in 2013 and this formula has been official since then.
Anna University (Tamil Nadu): Before 2023 batch: Percentage = (CGPA × 7.5) + 0.5. After 2023 batch (new NEP curriculum): Percentage = CGPA × 7.5. Example for pre-2023: CGPA 8.5 = (8.5 × 7.5) + 0.5 = 64.25%. Note: this is significantly lower than VTU's formula for the same CGPA — an important point when comparing across universities.
Mumbai University: Percentage = (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. CGPA 8.0 = (8 × 7.1) + 11 = 67.8%. This formula was introduced with the credit-based grading system.
CBSE (10th Board): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CGPA 9.2 = 87.4%. CBSE 12th: Subject-wise conversion: multiply each subject's grade point by 9.5. KTU (Kerala Technical University): Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. CGPA 8.0 = 75%.
What to Use When Applying for Jobs
Government sector: most central government recruitment (UPSC, SSC, railway, banking) accepts percentage or equivalent on CGPA scale. Convert using your university's official formula. Mention both CGPA and percentage on your resume.
Private sector: IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) typically have 60% or CGPA 6.0 cutoffs. Apply the university's official formula to verify eligibility. For campus recruitment, the percentage threshold applies to your university's formula, not a universal formula.
Higher studies abroad: GRE, GMAT, and foreign university applications typically ask for your CGPA on your institution's scale, not a converted percentage. Harvard, Stanford, and most US universities evaluate on 4.0 scale — your registrar's office can provide an official conversion to 4.0 scale.
