The Tip Calculator helps you quickly compute the tip amount, total bill including tip, and per-person share when splitting bills at restaurants, hotels, or for any service. Tipping culture varies significantly across India — in international hotel chains and high-end restaurants, a 10–15% tip is common, while in local dhabas and street food, tipping is optional.

Our calculator supports any number of people for splitting, custom tip percentages, and shows both the tip per person and total per person. This eliminates the awkward math at the table when splitting an unevenly distributed bill among friends after a meal.

Beyond restaurant use, the tip calculator is useful for: calculating appropriate fees for valets, bellboys (₹50–200), housekeeping, airport porters (₹50–100 per bag), food delivery (₹20–50), and home service professionals. For Swiggy and Zomato deliveries, the app includes tipping, but for direct restaurant orders, this tool helps estimate the appropriate amount.

Common use cases

  • Splitting restaurant bills evenly among a group of friends

  • Computing service charges vs voluntary tip to avoid double tipping

Tips for best results

  • 1Check if the bill already includes 'Service Charge' — in that case, additional tip is optional
  • 2Good service tip: 10–15% in fine dining; 5–10% in mid-range restaurants; round up for quick service
  • 3For groups of 6+, many restaurants automatically add 10% service charge
  • 4Tip on the pre-tax subtotal (not the GST-included total) for accurate calculation
  • 5For home service (plumber, electrician, AC technician): ₹100–200 tip is generous and appreciated

Frequently asked questions

Is Konnect2Tools free?
Yes. These in-browser tools are completely free to use with no account required for core functionality.
Do my files leave my device?
Browser document operations run locally, except where the operation uses an external service, such as AI summarisation. Read the processing note before using sensitive inputs.
Is the Tip Calculator tool safe to use?
Local operations process document content on your device. External-service operations may send inputs as described in the processing note. Keep originals and inspect the output.
Is tipping mandatory in India?
Tipping is entirely voluntary in India. Many restaurants add a 'Service Charge' (typically 5–10%) which appears on the bill — this is technically optional and you can request it be removed per the Department of Consumer Affairs guidelines. Voluntary tipping for good service is appreciated but never required.
What is a service charge and how is it different from GST?
GST (5% or 18% depending on restaurant type) is a mandatory government tax and non-negotiable. Service charge is an optional fee charged by the restaurant for serving staff — it is NOT the same as tip and is legally challengeable if you don't want to pay it. Always verify your bill for both charges.
How much should I tip food delivery partners?
₹20–50 for local restaurant deliveries is considered good. For orders above ₹500 in bad weather or heavy traffic, ₹50–100 is generous. Swiggy and Zomato allow adding tip at the time of ordering — this is split fairly between delivery partners.
What is the appropriate tip for hotel housekeeping in India?
For budget hotels: ₹50–100 per night. For 4–5 star properties: ₹200–500 per night. Leave cash directly on the pillow or desk with a note saying 'For housekeeping' to ensure it reaches the right person. Tipping at checkout doesn't guarantee housekeeping gets it.
