For salaried professionals in India, building a retirement corpus involves three primary government-backed instruments: EPF, PPF, and NPS. Each has distinct returns, liquidity, and tax treatment. The optimal retirement strategy typically involves all three in different proportions based on your age and income.

Returns Comparison

EPF: 8.25% p.a. (FY 2024-25), compounded annually, EPFO-declared. Government-guaranteed, no market risk. Consistent 8.25–8.65% over the last decade.

PPF: 7.1% p.a. (Q1 FY 2025-26), compounded annually, revised quarterly. Slightly below EPF but equally government-backed.

NPS: 10–14% for equity-heavy Tier 1 allocation over 10+ years. Market-linked, not guaranteed. Over 20+ year horizons, equity NPS outperforms EPF and PPF significantly — but with volatility.

Tax Benefits

EPF: Employee 12% basic qualifies for 80C. Interest and withdrawal (after 5-year continuous service) tax-free. EEE status.

PPF: Up to ₹1.5L/year under 80C. Interest and maturity completely tax-free. Full EEE status.

NPS: 10% of basic+DA under 80C. Additional ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B) — exclusive to NPS, beyond the ₹1.5L 80C cap. 60% tax-free lump sum at maturity; 40% compulsory annuity (taxable at slab). For a 30% taxpayer, the ₹50K extra deduction saves ₹15,450/year.

Liquidity and Withdrawal Rules

EPF: Partial withdrawal allowed for medical, marriage (7+ years), housing, education. Full withdrawal at retirement or 2+ months unemployment. Never withdraw on job change — taxable before 5 years.

PPF: 15-year lock-in, partial access from year 7. Loan from year 3–6. Extension in 5-year blocks. Most flexible among the three.

NPS: Locked until age 60. Partial withdrawal (25% of own contributions) after 3 years for specific purposes. Premature exit: 80% to annuity, 20% lump sum. Treat as untouchable until retirement.

Optimal Allocation

Step 1: Max EPF (automatic). Add VPF if you want more at 8.25% tax-free.

Step 2: PPF for guaranteed, completely tax-free growth. ₹75K–1.5L/year. 15-year lock-in is manageable for retirement planning.

Step 3: NPS for the exclusive ₹50K 80CCD(1B) deduction. If you're in the 30% slab, this saves ₹15,450/year — well worth the lock-in for retirement-focused investors.

Step 4: ELSS SIP for the equity growth component. Higher expected returns than NPS equity but without the annuity requirement.

For a 30-year-old at ₹15L CTC: EPF auto + PPF ₹1.5L/year + NPS ₹50K/year + ELSS SIP ₹10,000/month covers all tax-advantaged retirement tiers while maintaining equity growth exposure.
