Types of EPF Withdrawal
Full withdrawal: allowed only when a member is 58 years old (retirement), permanently disabled, emigrating abroad, or has been unemployed for 2+ months. Full withdrawal includes EPF + EPS balance. On resignation below 58, you should transfer (not withdraw) to preserve continuity for EPS pension.
Partial withdrawal: the EPFO allows partial withdrawals for specific purposes before retirement. Medical emergency: up to 6 months basic salary or employee + employer share (whichever is less), minimum 1 year membership. Marriage (self/children/siblings): up to 50% of employee's share, minimum 7 years membership. Education: up to 50% employee's share, after 7 years.
Home purchase/construction: up to 36 months basic+DA salary for purchase, 24 months for construction, after 5 years membership. Home loan repayment: up to 36 months for repayment, 10 years membership required. Member can withdraw for home-related purposes only once.
Tax Rules for EPF Withdrawal
Tax-free withdrawal: if you have continuously served for 5+ years (with same or different employer — EPF transfer counts as continuity), the entire EPF withdrawal (principal + interest) is tax-free. The 5-year rule counts from your first EPF contribution date.
Taxable withdrawal: if you withdraw before 5 years of continuous membership, it's taxable. TDS deduction: 10% TDS if PAN provided, 30% without PAN. The taxable amount is: employee contribution (already from post-tax salary — not taxable again) + employer contribution (taxable as 'salary') + interest on both portions (taxable as 'income from other sources').
Tax on UAN transfer vs new account: if you transfer EPF when changing jobs (using EPFO's UAN transfer), the service is considered continuous — no tax implications. If you withdraw and reinvest in new account, you lose the service continuity and face potential TDS if aggregate service is <5 years.
How to Claim EPF Online (Step-by-Step)
Prerequisites: UAN (Universal Account Number) must be activated and linked to Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account (IFSC and account number). Mobile number linked to Aadhaar must be active for OTP authentication. Log in at epfindia.gov.in > Member e-sewa portal.
Online claim process: Login with UAN and password > Online Services > Claim (Form-31, 19 & 10C) > Verify bank account last 4 digits > Select claim type (PF Advance for partial, Full Settlement for complete) > Fill details, upload supporting documents if required > Submit. Claim is processed in 7–15 working days.
Common rejection reasons: Aadhaar not linked to UAN, PAN name mismatch with EPFO records, bank account validation failure, incorrect previous employer details, or recent employer exit not updated. Check your annual PF passbook on the EPFO portal and resolve discrepancies before claiming.
