Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is India's premier savings scheme for parents of girl children — offering 8.2% guaranteed, tax-free returns (Q1 FY 2025-26), EEE status, and government backing. Since its 2015 launch, SSY has become the go-to financial planning instrument for daughters' education and marriage.

Key Features

Rate: 8.2% p.a. (Q1 FY 2025-26), compounded annually, quarterly revision. EEE: deposits eligible for 80C (up to ₹1.5L), interest tax-free, maturity tax-free.

Eligibility: One account per girl child below 10 years. Maximum two per family (exception for twins/triplets).

Deposits: Minimum ₹250/year, maximum ₹1.5L/year. Required for 15 years. Maturity at 21 years from opening.

Maximum deposit scenario: ₹1.5L/year × 15 years at 8.2% = ~₹69L maturity (all tax-free). Total deposited ₹22.5L; interest earned ₹46.5L.

Interest Rate History

9.2% (2015) → 8.6% (2016) → 8.1% (2018) → 8.4% (2019) → 7.6% (2020–21) → 8% (2023) → 8.2% (2024–present). The current 8.2% is the highest since 2019.

Pro tip: Deposit before April 5 every year to earn interest on that year's deposit for the full financial year. Late April deposits lose the first month's interest.

Withdrawal and Maturity

Education withdrawal: From the year the girl turns 18, up to 50% of previous year's balance can be withdrawn for higher education. Submit admission proof.

Marriage closure: Full balance can be withdrawn after girl turns 18 for marriage. Not allowed before 18.

Maturity: Full balance at 21 years from opening. Girl becomes the account holder at 18 — update KYC then.

Account goes inactive if ₹250 minimum deposit is missed. Revive with ₹50 penalty per inactive year.
